GRENOBLE INP-PAGORA

Grenoble INP - Pagora is a public engineering school specialising in fibres, paper, printed communication and bio-based materials. The school offers engineering and master's degree courses in initial cycle and apprenticeship. Its aim is to train professionals capable of meeting the environmental challenges facing our society.

The school also has its own research centre, the Process Engineering Laboratory for Biorefineries, Biobased Materials and Functional Printing (LGP2), staffed by French and international researchers and PhD students. The laboratory conducts innovative research to meet economic and societal expectations in terms of sustainable development (green chemistry, biorefineries, clean processes, recycling, bio-sourced materials, renewable energies) and traceability and safety (functional materials, intelligent paper and packaging, printed electronics, 3D printing). It is supervised by the CNRS, Grenoble INP - UGA and Agefpi.

A research cluster focusing on three themes

1. Surface functionalization by printing processes

Through projects (European Multilayer project, ANR Ecolabels projects, Catiminhy, Estampille, Think, IBFC, IDEMAX, Carnot Énergie du Futur Flexibat project) and contract funding, the FunPrint team is working on innovative issues (photoluminescent inks, The FunPrint team is working on innovative issues (photoluminescent and thermochromic inks), applications related to identification and security, and energy (batteries, fuel cells and photovoltaic cells) using all types of printing media (plastic, ceramic, silicon, glass and paper).

  • Printing fluids and processes

- Fluids formulation

- Rheological properties, photoluminescence, conductivity

  • Study of surfaces and interfaces

- Surface energy, adhesion phenomena

- Topography

  • Process engineering for surface functionalisation

- Various processes: conventional processes (screen printing, flexography, gravure, offset lithography) and digital printing (ink jet, electrophotography)

- Printing and coating of all kinds of substrates.

2. Biorefinery: chemistry and eco-processes

  • Advanced oxidation processes of lignocellulose
  • Characterization of lignocellulosic materials
  • Modelling and process simulation
  • Lignocelluloses biorefinery:
    - Energy efficiency of processes
    - Clean processes.

3. Multiscale biobased materials

  • Design, optimization and modelling of unit manufacturing operations of paper, cardboard, non-woven materials and composites
  • Structure of anisotropic fibrous media
  • End-use properties: study of the relationship between Process / Structure / Physical properties
  • Bio-nano-particles and their uses
  • New biomaterials: surface treatment of composites
  • Functional packaging: layout and use properties.
